This time of year, the air carries a crispness with the turning leaves. You can easily bring warmth and comfort into the living room with simple touches that reflect the essence of fall. Let this mellow time of year bring calm evenings that nourish and a warmth that can be felt as you step into the room. Join me to decorate a Cozy Fall Living Room with a new Feng Shui, Zen feeling! Rejuvenation is key to a healthier you! With Simple, yet effective Feng Shui practices any living room can become an inspiring and peaceful retreat!

Start with a good foundation for fall redecorating!

Steps for balancing the energy in the room:

1. First, start with clearing out and deep cleaning.

2. Move the furniture off carpets and into another room to start with a true clean slate.

3. Dust all the nooks that have been forgotten over the summer! The ceiling fan, vents, shelving etc. If you’re like me then that fan was always in motion all summer and you’re now horrified at the amount of dust buildup on the blades! Eeek, you get it! Then follow with a good vacuuming, remembering to empty the vacuum out and start anew.

4. Let fresh air in, open the door, windows and let in some fresh air for at least a good 15 minutes.

5. Include smudging,  aromatherapy diffuser, or a room spray with essential oils for fresh air and positive Chi balancing.

Step away as the freshness permeates the room. You should already feel a lighter air about the room when you pass through.  Aside from the pile of furnishings you plunged out of the space, He…he! I know it looks like a crazy mess, but this is the stuff that’s been screaming for change all year and you will rest easy with a new season to come.

The Feng Shui of it all is already starting to shift for the better and new and exciting things are sure to follow!

Decorate with seasonal flare by adding nature’s elements! As well as, moving & placing your furnishings back in an arrangement that feels just right for you and the Fall Season, here’s how:

Traditional Design Option:

Start with a good foundation for fall redecorating! Consider rearranging the furniture, if possible. The best living room structure is with the couch is in the, “Command Position," that is, against the wall with a clear view of the entry. This is a common traditional option. Then, set the rug under the couch, side tables, coffee table and general placement of all big furnishings. This includes bookcases, tables, ottomans and seating, etc.

Stagnant Energy Option 1:

If you feel like the living room has become boring, stale, depressing, or you find it difficult to relax in the room, it may be time to take a more drastic approach and shake things up for a while! You can add special touches of fall and feel anew in the room by pulling the furniture slightly off the walls for air flow and to create a more cozier feeling.

Stagnant Energy Option 2:

Needing even more change? Feeling less connected to family or friends? Perhaps a traumatic event has taken place in your life, or you simply feel the need for something new.

Trust me, I’ve been there…

Then, you really need a change! Pull seating out closer to a communal interest. Such as, a soothing fireplace setting, double bookcases as a center point, a television hideaway cabinet, or a great conversation piece.Key Feng Shui Point: Be sure to back the couch with a sofa table, bookcase, privacy screen, desk or tall potted plants if it’s pulled into the middle of a room. Create a clear flow for traffic to pass by behind, but with privacy and structure directly behind the seating area. Zones & Traffic FlowA rug can be placed under the couch for comfort and to stabilize the position in the room. Create conversation and/or television areas with the rug as your clear zone. It acts as an anchor to be decorated around and on. This is especially helpful if the room serves many functions, like mine does!

Warm tones with natural elements are just the thing for Fall Feng Shui vibes!

Adding the Natural Elements & Finishing Touches:

Now that the large staple furnishings are in place it's time to add in the natural elements that bring creative Feng Shui and the Fall seasonal allure into the room! You can utilize the Bagua map to figure out the areas of the space to enhance each of your life's goals. The elements are: Earth, Water, Fire, Metal and Wood. Nature brings us so much inspiration! Natural fiber woven basketry screams fall. Fill them with dried flowers, fresh herbs, or beautiful autumn colors. Mums are a great choice, as are cheery daisies and ferns! Landscapes of forests and woodlands are a great option to adorn walls and bookcases. Be sure to include fragrant candles to set the mood. I even enjoy bringing in fresh and faux leaves to sprinkle around, or press between glass for wall hangings.

Utilize your Senses

Make sure to think about what Fall means to you, the fragrances that evoke pleasant memories, the colors and the soft textures of throw blankets within easy reach for cool evenings.  Ground the Room with a Fresh Perspective. Sometimes the best way to re-create a room is to spice things up and to make something brand new! Do you have a wall that isn't utilized well? Perhaps, the room is narrow, or odd shaped and find it difficult to decorate.

Warm Thoughts for Cooler Days

Whatever your design style, Feng Shui can be just the thing to change the mood of the room. With cooler, darker days coming the special touches in your home décor can bring a warmth that lasts into the winter months. Adding nature's elements will help you hone in on areas of life that need more attention, as well as the ways you can change negative thought patterns to create positive one's in your life. The Feng Shui Map (Bagua) has many concepts we deal with in life that bring us joy and balance. It is a great method that can really help pinpoint the mental work that manifests physical change. Check your Bagua that corresponds with the desires for your life. As an example, the North, entry point of the living room lines up with the life path and career goals, bringing in water elements can support your aspirations. This act of creating a mental space for change and remembrance of it, will put you on the perfect path to see it through.

The living room is not just a room, but it supports life within its walls. Why not design it to do more with the sentiments you linger with and the ways you choose to live!
